Joint and Combined Doctoral Degrees
Some students decide to pursue a joint degree (between the Graduate School and a professional school) or a combined degree (combining Religious Studies and another department or program). Enrolled students interested in pursuing such a degree are encouraged to reach out to the DGS as early as possible. The DGS will work closely with the student, the DGS of the other department, and the student’s advisers to craft a manageable course of study and set of exams, and the DGS will petition for approval from the Graduate School.
Combined PhD in Religious Studies and Black Studies
In conjunction with the Black Studies Department, the Department of Religious Studies offers a combined Ph.D. in Religious Studies and Black Studies. This joint degree is most appropriate for students who enter the field of American Religious History within the Department of Religious Studies or for students who concentrate on aspects of modern religious thought.
Ad Hoc Combined PhD Programs
Students in the Religious Studies Department are able to propose Ad Hoc Combined PhD Programs, for example with Architecture, History, Music, Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations, American Studies, and Philosophy.
