Paul Essah

Paul Essah

Paul’s research brings the Hebrew Bible, Ancient Near East and African History and literature together in an interdisciplinary fashion to create new ways of thinking about the Hebrew Bible and its place in contemporary societies.

He began his graduate studies working broadly on questions of exile and the forces that ensure, sustain, and enforce its existence, namely empire, warfare, geopolitics etc. As an extension, he took courses and wrote on migration, displacement, and diaspora in antiquity.

During the beginning of year three of his PhD, his interest narrowed into questions of epistemic power and politics within exilic contexts, asking for example what counts as knowledge, how it is negotiated and the politics of its production. He is currently writing his dissertation prospectus tentatively titled, “The Politics of knowledge in MT Daniel,” which also draws comparisons with postcolonial Africana discourses of knowledge.

He holds a Master of Divinity from Columbia Theological Seminary, GA and a Master of Arts in Religion from Yale University Divinity school, CT.
