Dustin Gavin is a PhD candidate in Religious Studies and African American Studies researching black performance cultures and [black] popular culture in the United States. His work looks at the overlap and confluence of “sacred” and “profane” idioms. His dissertaion explores J-Sette and majorette dance––among other black queer and femme performance genres––in relation to aesthetics and practices of embodiment within black southern communities.
